Sugar Skull Batt to Handspun

After carding up all the super fun Sugar Skull batts for October's Phat Fiber I couldn't resist spinning up one of my own!! :)

The resulting tweed-style yarn is quite fetching, even if I do say so myself. :) It is really entertaining to watch the multi-colored silk noil pop up as you spin this batt.

I still have more of these batts available in my Etsy shop, so head on over to pick up one (or more) of your own to play with. ;)

Southern Adirondack Fiber Festival

We had a great time vending at the Southern Adirondack Fiber Festival this weekend!

I got to meet some fellow Phat Fiber contributors and got some fibery goodies. :)

Our next show is on Oct.8th at the Eastern Great Lakes Fiber Conference so I'll be a very busy fiberista in the very short meantime.

WIP Wednesday-Handspun Mitered Afghan Squares

It's WIP Wednesday and I've been spindle spinning my Phat Fiber contributor box samples while my GF and I watch movies and relax in the evenings.

One of the women on the Phat Fiber Ravelry Group forum inspired me with her own similar project, to knit my little handspun mini skeins into mitered afghan squares.

This is the perfect project for me! I love making small, repetitive pieces that travel easily and give me some instant gratification, but that are assembled into one impressive whole project.

Why did I not think of this myself, and sooner? I grew up sewing scrap quilts with my grandmother, so this definitely touches a special place in my heart. Plus the little skeins and little squares are so cute!

I've been having a blast participating in the Phat Fiber Box. All my fellow Phatties are so supportive and inspiring! Jessie and Marcus, the people who organize and run Phat Fiber, are just the most amazing people for bringing this all together every month!

Happy Thanksgiving and Other Assorted Content

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! I am visiting my parents in Central NY for the holiday and we're having a whole lot of fibery fun! Today is also my 26th birthday so I'm getting a really great birthday dinner!!!

Important Reminder: Today is the last day to enter to win one of my hand carded Lluxurious Batts in a Thanksgiving colorway (pictured above). Entries must be in by 12 pm tonight. See this post for details.

In knitting related news I just finished up these Fetching fingerless gloves for my friend Athena. We've been friends since we were kids and we are both back in town for Thanksgiving. It was wonderful to be able to catch up with her and share a little wool. These were made with my Llegend Worsted hand-painted yarn.

I'm also still plugging along on my Wendy Knits Shetland Pi Shawl; this is in the middle of clue 4. Obviously the KAL is over but it is a wonderful pattern and I don't mind going at my own pace.

I just started a Dumpling Bag(Rav link) too because they are just irresistibly adorable!

In really exciting business news I was recently accepted as a contributor to Phat Fiber. I am so honored and inspired to be a part of such a great group of fiber artists. If you have never checked out their sample boxes I would encourage you to do so. It's a great way to sample new-to-you indie dyers and fiber products without wasting money on a large quantity of something you don't end up liking.

I'm already busy cooking up ideas for my first contribution of samples which will go in the January 2011 box.

I thought I would share some pictures of my undyed fiber that's ready to become hand dyed batts and roving. I am really enjoying working with all these luxury fibers for my Llady Llama Fiber Co. Lluxurious Batts.

Loose cut merino:

Raw mohair locks (the stuff in front has just been washed and still needed to be dried and picked):

Silk noil:

SW BFL combed top:

Domestic wool roving:

SW Merino combed top:

Not pictured here but also in the undyed fiber collection for dyeing and batt making is recycled banana silk fiber, tussah silk roving, loose angora fiber and llama roving.

Hope everyone has a great Turkey Day and don't forget to give thanks for all the wonderful fiber animals who bring such joy to our lives!
